Indians Trade Peralta

07/29/2010

In one of two deals announced in the major leagues on Wednesday, three days before the deadline to trade without waivers, the Cleveland Indians dealt third baseman Johnny Peralta to Detroit for 19 year-old left-hander Giovanni Soto, who is still pitching in Class "A" baseball.

Detroit acquired Peralta to replace injured third baseman Brandon Inge.  Peralta was hitting .246 with 7 home runs and 43 RBIs.  Soto was 6-6 with a 2.61 ERA at "A" West Michigan.  In the Indians organization, he will be assigned to Lake County, a Class "A" team in northeastern Ohio.

Peralta's spot on the Cleveland roster will be taken by infielder Luis Valbuena, who has been promoted from "AAA" Columbus.

In another deal announced Wednesday, the Los Angeles Dodgers acquired outfielder Scott Podsednik from the Kansas City Royals for two minor leaguers, catcher Lucas May and right-handed pitcher Elisaul Pimentel.

The 34 year-old Podsednik is batting .310 this season, and has stolen 30 bases.

May hit .296 with 11 homers and 45 RBIs at "AAA" Albuquerque.  Pimentel had a 9-3 record with a 3.49 ERA at Class "A" Great Lakes.  Both will be assigned to the Royals' minor league organization.
